The importance of emotional education in student development

At Agora Sant Cugat International School, we understand that education goes beyond supporting academic learning. It also means helping children to understand their emotions, express what they feel, relate to others and build a solid foundation of self-esteem and confidence from the earliest years. For all these reasons, emotional education is part of everyday life on our Early Years campuses.

At our Agora Pipo Infant School campus, our project is based on play and experimentation within a warm, family-like environment, with musical stimulation, an introduction to the English language and emotional development to help children build their identity, self-esteem and confidence.

The Agora Patufet Infant School campus follows the same approach. Our innovative methodology takes creativity, participation, experimentation, emotions and multilingualism into account. It is always supported by personalised attention, through which children feel valued and cared for. For us, this combination is key at such a decisive stage as childhood, when many of the foundations for future personal, social and academic development are laid.

What is emotional education and why is it key?

Emotional education is the process through which we help students to identify, understand and manage their emotions, as well as recognise those of others. It is not an addition to learning, but an essential part of holistic development. It is essential to educate emotions from Early Years, as during the first years children learn to respond to what they feel, live alongside others, resolve small conflicts and gain confidence in themselves.

At Agora Pipo and Agora Patufet, years of experience have taught us that at these ages the brain learns very quickly and establishes basic ways of thinking, responding and solving problems. At the same time, the environment is decisive in helping children face emotions, relate to others and develop as people.

For these reasons, in our schools, emotional education is naturally integrated into an individualised, international, innovative and multilingual educational proposal, designed to accompany students from 4 months old through to later stages within the same educational project. This vision is also supported by the five pillars of our school, Agora Sant Cugat International School: the IB methodology as a model for the future, multilingualism, STEAM, sport and wellbeing, and the Shaping the World philosophy.

Emotional education

Emotional intelligence in the classroom

When we talk about socio-emotional development, we are referring to something that is worked on through everyday experiences, relationships of trust and placing the child at the centre of the educational process. On the Early Years campuses of Agora Sant Cugat, our methodology is based on an active, creative and experiential approach that stimulates intellectual, emotional and motor development. This means that learning is not separated from wellbeing, but progresses alongside it.

This perspective also connects very well with the International Baccalaureate approach, one of the pillars of our educational project. The IB methodology encourages critical thinking and helps students to inquire, analyse, evaluate and create from the earliest stages. It also fosters research, autonomous learning and commitment to the community. From our point of view, this way of learning supports not only academic competence, but also greater self-awareness, stronger emotional security and a greater ability to relate to others through empathy and reflection.

Techniques for teaching emotional management

In Early Years, techniques for teaching emotional management are applied naturally through play, routines, music, experimentation and daily support. At Agora Patufet and Agora Pipo, this stage is understood as a key moment to help children manage their emotions, establish social bonds and discover their natural talents.

For this reason, the classroom becomes a safe and welcoming environment where children can express what they feel, gain confidence, learn to live alongside others and gradually develop autonomy. An essential part of this process involves helping them to identify their own emotions, as well as those of their classmates, understanding that there are no good or bad emotions, but emotions that need to be recognised, named and managed appropriately.

Personalised attention, creativity, participation, play, music and multilingualism are also part of this way of learning, always from a respectful perspective adapted to each age. In addition, this proposal is integrated into a shared educational project for the Early Years campuses of Agora Sant Cugat, with English immersion from 6 months to 2 years old and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme from P3. In this way, emotional management is not treated as an isolated activity, but as part of everyday school life and the student’s holistic development.

How to foster empathy and resilience

Empathy and resilience begin to be built from a very early age. That is why we place so much importance on an environment in which children feel valued, supported and cared for. When a student grows in a space where their emotional world is looked after, they also learn to understand others better, to wait, to share, to tolerate small frustrations and to develop internal resources to face new challenges.

At Agora Patufet, we emphasise precisely this emotional education based on personalised attention, while at Agora Pipo we insist on the value of identity, self-esteem and confidence as an essential part of development.

Emotional education is, ultimately, an essential foundation for student wellbeing and the child’s holistic growth. Because when a student learns to know themselves, manage what they feel and relate to others with empathy, they are much better prepared to learn, create and develop with confidence throughout their school life.
