What is the process of moving to an International Baccalaureate school like?

Everything families should know before changing schools: admissions, adaptation, international curriculum and student support.

Changing schools is an important decision for any family, especially when looking for an international educational environment that supports students at every stage. Every family arrives at a school with a different story. Some are looking for an environment where languages are part of everyday life. Others want their children to grow up with a more open view of the world, or to learn in a place where academic development is valued alongside curiosity, autonomy and the way students relate to others.

At Agora Sant Cugat International School, we understand international education as something that goes beyond learning in different languages. For us, it means supporting students as they learn to think for themselves, ask meaningful questions and gradually become more independent. We want them to develop critical thinking, communicate their ideas with confidence and learn to listen to different ways of seeing the world.

From the early years through to Baccalaureate, school is a place where students not only acquire knowledge, but also learn to live together, collaborate and discover who they are and what they can contribute.

Learning in an international environment

An international school is not only defined by the languages spoken in its classrooms. Languages are important but the international experience is also lived through daily interaction.

In Agora Sant Cugat International School, students from more than 60 nationalities learn and grow together. This means that, beyond the subjects they study, students share their day-to-day life with classmates from different cultures, countries and ways of understanding the world.

This daily coexistence is enriching. It helps them listen to other points of view, understand different realities and grow with a more open mindset. Sometimes, the most important learning also happens in the way students relate to one another, collaborate and learn from each other.

When a student joins from a different curriculum

In an international school, students often come from very different educational backgrounds. Some come from the Spanish education system. Others have studied within an American, British, French, German or another international curriculum. Each system has its own pace, ways of working and assessment methods, which is why the arrival of a new student should always be approached in a personalised way.

The International Baccalaureate is a rigorous and internationally recognised model, with its own methodology. Not all students arrive with the same background or the same way of learning, which is why it is important to understand each pupil’s starting point: their academic level, languages, educational stage, strengths and what they may need in order to adapt with confidence.

In Agora Sant Cugat International School, this support begins during the admissions process. Before a student joins the school, we seek to understand their story, interests, way of learning and also how they are experiencing the change emotionally. It is not about starting from zero but about helping them build on everything they already bring with them.

Having the IB Continuum allows us to support this transition with a complete view of every stage. Agora Sant Cugat International School offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. This continuity enables students to grow within a coherent educational project, adapted to their year group and open to their possibilities.

We have been working with the International Baccalaureate for more than 15 years and are the only IB Continuum school in the Vallès. This experience helps us support students according to the moment at which they join us, whether in Primary, Secondary or Baccalaureate, so that they can understand the methodology, gain confidence and feel part of the school from the very beginning.
